Southern Fried Oyster Mushrooms
Enjoy the crispy, crunchy goodness of Southern Fried Oyster Mushrooms—Whether you're looking for a plant-based chicken alternative, or just love mushrooms, these are certain to be a hit! This easy-to-follow recipe yields a deliciously golden, double-battered dish that's perfect as an appetizer or main course. Let's get cooking!
Ingredients
150 g oyster mushrooms (blue oyster are our favorite)
Optional Dipping Sauces
Instructions
Prepare the Mushrooms
-
Gently clean the oyster mushrooms with a damp paper towel. Avoid rinsing them with water as it can make them mushy.
Create the Flour Mixture
-
Combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper in a large mixing bowl.
Make the Batter
-
Take ⅓ cup of the seasoned flour mixture and transfer it to a separate bowl. Mix it with ¾ cup water and whisk until you have a smooth, lump-free batter.
Coat the Mushrooms
-
Dip each mushroom into the wet batter to evenly coat it. Then transfer it to the seasoned flour mixture, coating it thoroughly.
-
For an extra crispy texture, double-coat by repeating the process (dip back into the wet batter, then the seasoned flour once more).
Fry the Mushrooms
-
Heat oil in a deep pot over medium-high heat. Test the oil by dropping a pinch of flour into it; if it sizzles, it’s ready!
-
Fry the mushrooms in batches to avoid overcrowding the pot. Cook for a few minutes until golden brown and crispy.
-
Remove mushrooms using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil. For maximum crispiness, transfer to a cooling rack.
Serve
-
Plate the crispy fried mushrooms and pair them with your favorite dipping sauce. You can also use them in a sandwich for a fantastic vegan "chicken" bite!
Tips
-
Don't skip the double coating! It’s key to achieving that satisfying crunch.
-
If you run out of batter: Simply mix a bit more flour and water to extend the wet batter.
-
Storing leftovers: Place in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in an oven or air fryer to restore crispiness.
